Degrowth Spurt

A natural outgrowth of growth is attrition. Closed systems -- the Earth being a perfect example of one -- experience radical consequences of unchecked growth.

 

Degrowth is a movement based on reducing consumption, before unchecked development leads to an inevitable apocalypse. The Romanian economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen came up with the idea of degrowth in the 70s.

 

Volunteer simplicity is the term used by proponents of degrowth: resisting consumerism doesn't mean moving back to the stone age, but getting clear about what we really need in life and what we put values on.

Building a Noosphere

Humans are building a noosphere, or sphere of collective thought, to transform the biosphere and dispel the illusory fog in which we have been sheathed. To cut through the denseness of habit and our own karmic patterns, we must recognize our role in a larger evolutionary cycle.

 

We have the potential to change reality. We know this, but we have yet to consciously act on this principle in sufficient numbers that effects are readily apparent to the larger masses (whose perceptive apparatuses are largely focused in other directions).

 

Once they do notice, the tide will turn much more quickly.
